This 5-bedroom family home, located within a London conservation area adopts proportional elements from the surrounding housing stock, whilst utilizing modern environmental materials coupled with active and passive technologies, such as geothermal heating and rainwater harvesting. The principle structure is composed of pre-fabricated Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) clad with sustainable sourced Western Red Cedar and Glaster (plaster and recycled glass), whilst the demolished existing building will provide the foundation’s hardcore. Every zone, from the communal rooms to the more private spaces requires different conditions. Therefore following intensive site experiments, the room locations, sizes, glazing were arranged in order to maximise the site’s natural opportunities. These zones were then augmented to resemble identifiable characteristics of the neighbouring building, whilst retaining the initial principle benefits. The SIP canvas and its integral structure enabled a material envelope to reinforce elements of the design, as well as provide visual continuity along the main road, answering any potential concerns from local planners and residents. |
